Verbal Abuse

Verbal Abuse Help & Treatment

Verbal abuse is a problem of monumental proportions and affects children, teens and adults in all walks of life. Verbal abuse involves the use of belittling, insulting and intimidating words to impose your will over someone else's.

Women are at the highest risk of experiencing verbal abuse, usually victimized by their current or ex-spouses. Those in a verbally abusive relationship may not know that verbal abuse is happening, and the abuser also may not realize that the name-calling, put-downs and controlling behavior is abuse.

If you or a loved one is suffering from verbal abuse, help is just a phone call away. Please call the Women's Center for Healthy Living toll-free at 1-800-391-4309. We are standing by day and night and all calls are confidential.

Verbal Abuse Signs

Verbal abuse is something no one should tolerate. Here are two of the most common signs women may exhibit when they have been victims of verbal abuse:

  • While there are women that remain outgoing in a verbally abusive relationship, the vast majority of women begin to emotionally shut down. They no longer desire to hang out with friends and have a hard time functioning in everyday life.
  • Many women become ultra critical of themselves and even begin to look for reassurance from their friends and co-workers. This reassurance may be about how they look physically, but even more common is that they look for reassurance about the choices they make on a daily basis.

Co-related Behaviors

Women who do not get out of verbally abusive relationships eventually end up with an array of physical and emotional problems such as:

  • Extreme anger and resentment
  • Loss of hope and poor self-esteem
  • Development of eating disorders (especially true if the verbal abuse she has endured had anything to do with a flaw in her looks)
  • Alcoholism or drug addiction (as a way to escape)
